Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry assembles five extended discomixes cut at the legendary Black Ark between 1977 and 1979. Disco Devil Vol. 1 captures Perry at full tilt, stretching rhythms into widescreen dub excursions that foreground bass, echo and versioning.
Opening with the original Upsetter 12" mix of ‘Disco Devil’, the set moves through killer cuts including ‘Lion A De Winner’, Winston Watson’s ‘Dispensation’, and Junior Murvin’s ‘Roots Train’. Lord Creator’s ‘Such Is Life’ appears in a previously unreleased full-length discomix, adding further weight to an already essential selection.
Drawn from a fertile late-70s run, these mixes highlight Perry’s instinct for space, pressure and studio experimentation, where each track mutates into its own dub ecosystem.
