We head all the way back to 1988 with this one. One of the early Derrick May classics, Mayday’s Sinister EP remains potent techno produce all these years later - hence the new edition from KMS Records. The two mixes of Sinister’s title-track here demonstrate May’s way with melody and harmony, the tunes largely free of the dubbiness of some early techno joints and letting their dinky, almost Depeche Mode-esque lines take the centre. ‘Wiggin (Master Reese Mix)’ and ‘Freestyle (Bongo Mix)’ reach further out - the former towards deeper sounds, the latter into dense drum tracking.
